Canada Cuppies

A few months ago we tried our hand at photographing cupcakes by the very talented Audrey from Sugar Pie Gourmet Cakes and Classes and yesterday I planned a session for the girls Wen Lin & Joanne to have a cupcake decorating class with her and yes, we took more photos :p

Here are some shots of the cupcakes which Audrey made for the Canadian Association of Singapore. We were after an autumn feel with warm hues. All those leaves you see are handmade with fondant and totally edible!

Getting that look

While researching for Dylan's birthday cake on the internet, I was surfing through tens of websites and food blogs. I came across one whose pictures I really love and as I was reading the blog posts, I realised that this blogger WAS FROM SINGAPORE! What the?!?! I scrolled back to look at the photographs on the site again and they were darn good! This can't be shot in Singapore (what terrible light we have) I kept muttering to myself. BUT THEY WERE! And they have that look, I dunno how to describe...the "ang moh" look that's what I would say hahahaha. Anyway, I showed the photos to the girls and they too were impressed. I said we HAVE to try shooting some food and getting THIS LOOK so one afternoon in between shoots, we took some shots of the leftover cupcakes that Audrey from Sugar Pie Gourmet Cakes and Classes made for my photography workshop with Geoff Ang last week (more on this in another post).

So here you go, our virgin attempt at the "ang moh" look kind of food photography wahahahahaha!

How? Do we get a pass? :D

3 Inch Sinners

Last Sunday, while waiting for Kay to finish his chinese class, I had a walk around Cluny Court and saw a small shop there that's painted all white with orange text on it's wall. No other signage to give me a clue of their product. Curious, I went in to see what they were selling. Actually, the aroma wafting from the shop already told me it's something to do with chocolate!

I was right, they sell 3 inch sinners :p Molten chocolate cakes to be exact! You know the kind that has liquid chocolate oozing out once you punch your spoon through the layer of chocolate cake. YUMMY! I decided to buy the mini versions so I can try the various flavours they had. Baked fresh on the spot, I was delighted by the texture and taste of the little cakes. Dylan had a couple too :) I love the hazelnut and mint versions.

A week later, I decided to get another box of 4 minis for Kayden to try as he had none last week. Damn there was a price increase :s So i just bought one 3 inch cake for $6 (instead of 4 minis for $8) and 2 Death By Chocolate cupcakes. They were a hit with the boys and I was left with just one tiny bite from scrapping the bottom of the bowl.

Oh the shop name is "3 Inch Sin". Run by a brother sister team who can't get enough of chocolate that they want us to have some too :) Check them out if you are in the area.

3 Inch Sin, you keep us sinning!

(apart from the 2nd pix taken with my iPhone, the rest of the pictures in this blog post taken from their website and facebook)

Portobello Fettuccine

I was supposed to cook and serve this dish for Dylan's garden party but I totally forgot about it till the guests started arriving :s Anyway it's a really simple dish and I love the simple ingredients plus it is vegetarian yet still packs a punch from the portobello mushrooms so do give it a try!

INGREDIENTS:
200g of fettuccine pasta (or amount enough for 2)
4 big portobello mushrooms or 6 small ones
1 big onion
1 ripe tomato or a few dollops of tomato sauce
5 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar
salt and black pepper to taste
sprinkle of dried basil
chilli flakes (optional)

METHOD:
Cook the fettuccine as per instructions on pack and coat with some olive oil after draining. Set aside.
Chop the mushrooms and tomato coarsly and the onion finely.
Heat some olive oil in a medium pan and fry the onion till slightly brown and fragrant.
Add in the mushrooms and vinegar and stir for a few minutes till the vinegar starts to caramelise.
Toss in the tomato and let it cook before including the pasta.
Mix well.
Sprinkle in the basil and chilli flakes before serving.
Enjoy! :)

The Kiwiberry

The first time I pop this little fruit into my mouth, I was expecting the sourish tang of the regular green kiwi. But wow, it was squishy soft and very sweet and with a skin thinner than the grape, what's not to like about this fruit? So I introduced it to Dylan last week and he loves it too! It's kind of expensive though, for a punnet of nine, it costs about $3.50. Do read more about this delicious fruit here. My all time favourite kiwi is the golden one, the kiwiberry is a close second. Now if only they will cultivate a golden kiwiberry :)
